A Friday Mashup Win and an Owl Birthday Card

Today is already off to a good start! One of my cards was chosen as the winner of the latest Friday Mashup challenge! What a nice surprise!

Another reason to celebrate - our neice, Zulea, has a birthday today! 

I thought it would be fun to make her a card with punch art owls. I saw this great sketch from Always Playing With Paper and used it as the base of my card design:

I love the new designer series paper in the Stampin Up Spring Occasions Mini Catalogue and decided to use it on this card. The colour combo of Real Red, Bermuda Bay and Coastal Cabana look fabulous together! 

How cute are these owls?! They were created using the Owl Builder punch from Stampin Up - probably one of my favourite punches of all time! The cute party hats were created using the Petite Pennant Builders punch (cut off part the bottom portion) and one of the Itty Bitty punches for the pom. And the owl party continues inside the card!

30th Birthday Celebration

A couple days ago, we celebrated my hubby's 30th birthday! While he may think he's getting old, he is forever young in my eyes :) He is a wonderful, thoughtful, optimistic, determined, encouraging person; a talented photographer and an avid outdoorsman. Oh ya... and handsome too!

 

Words cannot express how much I love this guy!

 

To celebrate, we enjoyed a delicious dining experience at a local restaurant called the White Goose Bistro. He had his favourite - red wine and seafood, and I tried chicken cordon bleu with roasted potatoes and white wine. So good!

 

Of course, I made him a unique handmade card. I struggled at first with the design of my card, knowing that it had to be special. I decided to stick with the "30" theme and I was very pleased with the result:

 

 

I started with a 5" x 5" square card, then simply drew the '30' and cut it out, leaving the fold at the top of the '30'. I cut 1" strips of designer paper and glued them on the card front, then re-cut the 30 shape. I added a fun banner using bakers twine and the pennant punch. Three candy dots embellish the card.

 

 





 

For his birthday this year, I decided to get him a unique gift, something he would never guess! And I totally surprised him! (this is hard to do, as he usually picks out exactly what he wants or simply buys it himself). I wanted to give him a chance to guess, so I made a gift tag with a hint on it...

 

 

 

You're probably thinking, a shark? really? What could this gift possibly be? haha... this was Kevin's reaction exactly. Well let me explain... usually once a year we like to drive down to Kelowna for a mini weekend getaway. They have an awesome store called "Bones and Stones" and we make sure to stop there every time. They have the most unique house décor items from all over the world. We have added a few stones, etc. to our collections. But one thing Kevin has been eyeing up are the megalodon shark teeth that they sometimes sell there and so I knew this would be the perfect gift.

 

 

To give you an idea, this single tooth is actually 5.09" in length. Here's a better picture of how big these sharks actually were:

KCRR #19 and FMS #87 {Love & Laughter}

Can't believe it's already Thursday! Love short work weeks :)

Today we introduce a new KCRR challenge!

The two elements randomly chosen are:

Petite Pennants Builder Punch

Love & Laughter Stamp Set

This actually was more of a challenge then I initially thought. I don't normally use banners on my wedding cards, so I looked on Pinterest for some ideas on different ways to use the Petite Pennant Builder punch and came across this fun card!  I used it as inspiration and created a pennant pattern using Crumb Cake designer paper.

I followed the new sketch by Freshly Made Sketches. I decided to flip the sketch since it worked a bit better with my design.

The card front is embossed with Elegant Lines. The cake from the Love & Laughter stamp set is stamped in Crumb Cake and little flowers with pearls are added to embellish it. I created a shadow behind the oval shape using Soft Suede cardstock. Crochet trim ribbon and roses with pearls embellish the card.

Happy Birthday to a Golfer!

Monday was kind of a blur. I had a busy, productive day at work and it was go-go-go after that. I did some groceries, washed a pile of dishes (we NEED a dishwasher!), ate a quick dinner, and stood in line for an hour (in the freezing cold!) to sign up for a new session of Zumba classes. After that, I finally had time to relax and do what I love to do to wind down from a busy day - papercrafting :)

Today is our brother-in-law's birthday! Mark loves to golf, so I thought, what a perfect theme for a birthday card! I searched pinterest for golf punch art ideas and came across Tawnya Bonnell's blog. It was perfect and looked so easy to make! I added my own creative touch to my card and this is the end result:

 

I made it into a simple landscape of a golf course. The sky is created by simply sponging Bashful Blue ink on Whisper White cardstock and punching out clouds from the Cupcake Builder punch. The hills are were cut free-hand. I used the Extra-Large Oval punch and polka dot Old Olive designer paper for the green. It's hard to see, but the golf ball has indented polka dots on it (using the opposite side of the Perfect Polka Dot embossing folder). I then used the Pennant Builder punch for the flag.

KCRR #8 {Pumpkin Pie and Scallop Trim}

Happy Friday!!

Yesterday was a long day. It felt like Friday, which makes the week go by even slower! Even though I woke up feeling tired, I was quite productive throughout the day. I stopped by the mall after work to kill some time before my hubby came home. I haven't gone shopping in a while and I'm in need of another purse. Well okay.. maybe I don't NEED another purse... but I would definitely love a new one for a change :) I'm looking for a larger cross-body bag, one that would be great for traveling as well. Unfortunately, I had no such luck... I think I'll wait a couple more weeks until more spring clothes and accessories start to make their way into the stores. Just another excuse to go shopping! :)

I was so happy to see my hubby last night! He came home with some delicious fish (including halibut, which I have yet to try) and he found an ocean treasure - a glass ball! These things are quite rare to find. They were once used by Asian fisherman to keep their fishing nets afloat. It is estimated that most floats that have washed up on shore have been afloat for 10 years! (wow!). It usually takes people decades to find one of these! Here's what it looks like:

We have collected a fair number of seashells and stones while we've been living out West. This will be a great addition to our collection!

Now it's time for another card challenge!

These are the two elements that were randomly chosen:

Pumpkin Pie

Scallop Trim Border Punch

 

This was one of the easier challenges that we've done so far. The only struggle I had was choosing a good colour to go with Pumpkin Pie. It is such a vibrant colour and orange is not a colour you can match up with anything. So I had a look through my cardstock and ended up using Cajun Craze and Daffodil Delight. Since Pumpkin Pie is so bright, I like to use it for kid's birthday cards. I embossed the card front with Perfect Polka Dots. A banner is created with the Petite Pennants Builder punch and the stamps from Pennant Parade. It's such a fun and festive stamp set! I paired it with a birthday sentiment from a hostess stamp set called Happiest Birthday Wishes. To embellish the card I added orange striped bakers twine and small rhinestones on the pennants. Finally, I added the scallop trim border in Cajun Craze.
