A 50th Birthday Card for a Doctor

I often have requests to make customized greeting cards. This time I was asked to make a 50th birthday card for Kevin's aunt. I was given the following specifics to incorporate into the card:

- something medical (as she is a doctor)
- her favourite flower - hydrangeas
- her favourite colour - purple

I always love being presented with challenges - it gets my creative juices flowing!

How am I going to incorporate all 3 items into one card? Well, the first thing I usually do is grab my sketchbook and start brainstorming by sketching some design ideas. As I'm doing this, I google medical related clipart for inspiration.

Here's the sketch of my final design:

A little bit of everything in one card :)

And here's how it came together:

The stethoscope, syringe and doctor bag were all made from scratch using pieces of cardstock. The medical symbol on the doctor bag is a punched out symbol from the Stampin Up Itty Bitty Punch Pack. The same punch was used to create the hydrangea flower. I used the stamp set "Memorable Moments" for the sentiment, popping up the "50th" to give the card some dimension. For some added elegance, I embossed the white background with the "Elegant Lines" embossing folder. 

A Birthday Wish for an Artiste!

Dropping in for a quick post to share a special card made for a special person!
My older sister has a birthday today! I don't get to celebrate with her unfortunately, as she lives all the way in Scotland, but I'm thinking of her today and sending my best wishes overseas!

 

She is a beautiful person inside and out, has a thoughtful and caring heart, and is a creative and talented artist. I wanted to create a card that would best suit her and I thought an artist easel card would be perfect. Here's how it turned out:

 

This card is a little larger than a regular A2 size card. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact measurements, but it's roughly 4.75" x 6". I used a woodgrain stamp on Crumb Cake cardstock to create a wooden look. To make the artist palette, I simply used the large oval punch and the word window punch. The paint drops on the palette were created using one of the itty bitty punches. For the paint brush, I used one of the leaves from the Little Leaves sizzlit for the brush part and used part of the word window punch to create the handle (altering it with scissors). The Gorgeous Grunge stamp set was perfect the paint splatters! 

 

 

 

I completed the card with a handmade envelope using the new Watercolour Wonder DSP.

Inspired By... the Grand Prismatic Spring

Today we introduce a new "Inspired By..." challenge!

It was my choice this week and I chose one of my favourite photos from our California road trip:

 

This is called the Grand Prismatic Spring located in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. My hubby took this photo from the top of a steep hill. It was a tough climb on a hot day, but so worth it! The colours of this hot spring are spectacular!

 

I decided to use these colours as inspiration for my card design. I thought it would be fun to use the masking technique and sponging to create a background for the card front. Here's how it turned out:

 



I first cut out the framelit from a post-it note (using the big shot) to use as my mask. I then placed it in the center of the card front and sponged around it. After I was happy with background, I peeled off the post-it note and stamped "Happy Birthday" in the middle. I then added small butterflies with rhinestones to embellish the card. It's a simple design, maybe a little too simple, but I think it really makes the colours stand out.

A Birthday Shout-Out and a Milestone Anniversary

Today we celebrate two special occasions -- a brother's birthday and a veterinarian anniversary.

Kevin's youngest brother, Victor, turns 27 today! He currently lives in Hamilton, ON with his wife, Chelsea and their son, Micah (who is adorable, by the way!) He is the studious type and is studying his way to becoming a minister. A little over a year ago, when Victor and Chelsea came to visit us in PG, we had the pleasure of hearing one of his sermons in our own church (Prince George CRC).  He speaks clearly and with confidence and has a way of incorporating the history of the Bible times and how it can be applied to today. It will be neat to see how God uses him in the future!

Here's wishing Victor a very Happy Birthday!

Remember this card? I created it a few weeks ago (see original blog post here). It makes a perfect masculine birthday card!

And another reason to celebrate -- My father-in-law has reached 40 years as veterinarian! What a significant milestone! I decided it would be very fitting to create an animal-related anniversary card. I was inspired by Mary Fish's paw print card (click here to see her post). Here's what I came up with:

 

Can you tell what punch I used for the paw? It's a full heart punch and the 'toes' are small ovals from the Ovals nestabilities. I love punch art! This one especially is super easy and just perfect for this occasion! I fussy cut the numbers and popped them up to give the card some dimension. The strip of Chocolate Chip cardstock is embossed with a square lattice pattern. Finally, I added the sentiment 'Happy Anniversary' and cut them in flag shapes.
